What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers are now commonly used to reduce facial lines and wrinkles. Dermal refers to skin and Dermal Fillers are an injection therapy used to contour, expand, soften and enhance facial features. Injectable Fillers can be temporary, permanent or semi permanent. We call them dermal but some of the injections are not always injected into the skin, but often placed down into the deeper layers of tissue and there are some procedures that we will inject deeply down on to bone. Medically we refer to these injections as ‘Soft Tissue Expanders’ and Hyaluronic Acid ( HA ) is the commonest filler used today around the world and these will provide you with a temporary effect, lasting from six to eighteen months.

Belotero ® Juvederm ® Perlane ® Restylane ® Sub-Q ® Vital ® Volbella ® Voluma ® and Stylage ® are Trade Names that manufacturers give to their particular Injectable Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers these brands are available today at the Aesthetika Clinic in Sheffield.

What do they do?

The temporary dermal fillers contain a sugary gel substance called Hyaluronic Acid which when injected expands the tissues and then attracts water, this can temporarily reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. When injected skilfully and accurately fillers help to plump the tissues up and out, sculpting and contouring the face and body and they are a very effective treatment in smoothing and reducing facial lines and wrinkles. HA fillers are commonly injected into lips giving them a fuller and plumper appearance. They can be injected almost anywhere in the body for instance they can alter alter the shape of a nose, jaw or chin.

How do they work?

When injected they expand the soft tissue and naturally integrate into the skin and the deeper underlying tissues. This adds volume and lifts the skin and attracts moisture into the tissues. Dermal Fillers can therefore be used to fill out defects like acne scars and will enhance and rejuvenate any area that is injected.

Are they permanent?

No

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers will eventually dissolve and be excreted from the body. HA dermal fillers can be reversed, by the injection of a special enzyme. There are also permanent and semi permanent fillers available, but we would exercise caution with their use and permanent fillers should only be given under medical supervision as once injected cannot be altered or changed.
